Forever In Our Hearts

Memorial bench for my friend Chuck "Montana" Carlson

With everything happening here in the community, following Bryan Sax’s tragic death, I can’t help but remember my friend and fraternity brother Chuck “Montana” Carlson as well… Chuck also died tragically young, from cancer at 36, almost the same age as Bryan. Chuck was a long-time Aspen resident, ski instructor, and hockey coach. He also left hundreds of friends here wondering how something like this could happen to such a great guy.

One day a few months ago, I was out riding my bike around town, taking pictures of the amazing fall foliage, after a great hike up the Ute Trail to the top of Aspen Mtn with some friends (see my 2nd ever photo on this site “Fall In Full Color“). After riding a fair bit up toward Independence Pass, and taking some pics at the North Star Nature Preserve (pdf), I came back into town and found that the East of Aspen Trail ran into a small winding trail leading to the new Snyder Park, which I’d never seen before…

As I was admiring the park and water feature there, I saw this bench! I didn’t even know there was a memorial bench for Chuck, and here, at the end of a perfect fall day, the setting sun shone right on it. It brought me a sense of peace, and really just made me feel so at home here, like I really do belong in Aspen.

Snowmass Creek valley and Mt. Daly on a fall hike, while visiting Aspen in '07

I took this photo before I moved out here, when I was interviewing and finalizing housing. This was a nice hike just outside Snowmass Village: starting at the Campground parking lot, I took the easy Ditch Trail, which connected to the East Snowmass Creek Trail in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness Area, then continued along this trail for an hour or so, looking at the back of Snowmass ski area (ridge of Sneaky’s) from across the valley. This was taken the same day as my “Last Fall” post here.

Chapel And Shadow Mountain

The Aspen Chapel is one of the first picturesque buildings you see as you come into Aspen, right at the roundabout. It’s located such that there are great mountain backdrops in every direction, when photographing it. This particular view shows Shadow Mountain in the background; the front of which is part of Aspen Mountain ski area, and the Trainor’s double-black ski runs. There was good contrast provided by the fall colors and one of our first snows of the season. This was taken the same day as my earlier “Snow Is Coming” photo.

Last Fall

A little duality in the title there… We’re supposed to get a big storm in the next few days, signaling the “last (of) fall,” and the beginning of winter. And, this photo was taken a year ago, “last fall” when I was out here in Aspen to interview and find housing.

I was on the East Snowmass Trail, after starting on the Ditch Trail at the Campground Parking Lot. This view is looking up at the back side of Snowmass Ski Area. In fact, the ridgeline in this photo is where I hiked up in August of this year, along Sneaky’s ski run (see my earlier posts “Old Beer, Flora” and “Summer Ski Jump”). I loved the varied red, grey, and tan colors of the cliffs above, along with the bright yellow aspen trees and green conifers below.

Another beautiful Aspen sunset… taken just outside the entrance to my condo building, looking at Aspen Mountain (Ajax).

Dark Sky, Fall

Since Fall is giving way to Winter… I thought I’d post some more of my Fall photos. The mountains and weather patterns here in Aspen really provide some exceptional lighting in the mornings & evenings. This was the view of Smuggler Mountain, as I was walking into my condo a few months ago. So striking, with the sunshine highlighting the aspens, as they are starting to burst into full color, and the dark sky providing the contrasting backdrop.

Fall And Winter

Snow and sun on the changing aspen leaves

It’s supposed to snow tonight, so I thought I’d share a shot I took last year, on an adventure up Basalt Mountain, about a month before I moved out here. It was probably the first snow of the year, and the leaves were still turning… the morning sun really made everything look beautiful, and it was so cool to see both Fall and Winter at the same time.
